Practice Teaching

Peer Teaching
Peer teaching is a teaching phase soon after micro teaching. Peer teaching means teaching a small group (peers). Here lessons are delivered under the supervision of a lecturer having good experience. After each lesson feedback is given by peers and the supervisor. Its a simulation of block teaching.
The following lessons were delivered by me during peering teaching.

Lesson-1
Topic: Electricity and Circuits.

This lesson was effectively delivered with many activities. The lesson began with identifying the terminals of a cell and of a bulb. Various batteries and tiny bulbs were handed to the students to identify its terminals. Students also carried out various electrical connections and understood the components of an electric circuits. Worksheets after each activity helped in better delivery of the lesson. Students enjoyed performing the activities and completing worksheets.

Lesson-2
Topic: Sexual Reproduction in Plants.

The topic began with showing students the upper part of a coconut sapling and asking students " From which part of a coconut tree do we get a new plant?" Later, checking their answer by showing them the coconut underneath. This activity was followed with a worksheet. In the development, the male and female reproductive parts of a flower were explained to the students with the help of flannel board cut outs. Worksheets were circulated to test students' knowledge.

My Experience
I was a bit nervous before my first lesson wondering how it would be. As the lesson progressed, I started enjoying it as the peer group liked the activities involved in the lesson. The feedback received was very much helpful. I went on to improve my C.B work and managing my time. So wasn't tensed before my second lesson.

I must say that peering teaching has helped me over come fright and be more optimistic and confident. And of course the feedback helped me reduce my errors.

Block Teaching
Block teaching (internship) is a phase after practice teaching. Here we select a school convenient for us and deliver lessons. I chose Holy Spirit Institute, Margao for my internship. Like peer teaching feedback is obtained from the supervisor but not from peers.
The following lessons were delivered by me during my internship.
Classroom Lesson

Topic: Effect of Light on Objects
The lesson was full activities. All students got a chance to participate in the lesson. Students liked  luminous and non-luminous objects the most as it involved flannel board. The worksheets also attracted the attention of the students.

Discussion lesson

Topic: Garbage in, Garbage out
Considering the fact that all students are aware of garbage issue, students were made to discuss garbage related situation in groups of 4 students. A chart containing an image and a situation was handed to each group. All four members of the group contributed their points. Later, after 10 minutes, one member from each group shared their points to the entire class. All the points discussed were jotted down on C.B by the teacher. The teacher reinforced all the group members after their respective presentations.

Laboratory lesson

Topic: Light travels in a straight line
The property of light was demonstrated by the teacher with the help of an experiment in the laboratory. The step by step procedure was written on the roller board. The experiment was first demonstrated by the teacher with the help of students. Later the students performed the experiment in groups of 5 students. Simultaneously, worksheets were all circulated.

ICT lesson
Topic: Wastewater Story
This lesson was delivered in the computer lab. The power point was downloaded on nine PC's. A group of 5 students viewed the lesson together. The power point included  pictures, activities and even worksheets. In the end the lesson was summarized by the students. Students liked viewing the lesson on the computer as its something new to them.

My Experience
During internship, my interaction with the students increased. I was able to break the speed impediment I usually had. I learnt to conclude my lessons on time. I learnt to be pleasant and strict at the same time.  Advice and support of Holy Spirit Institute teachers helped me in reaching out to the students in a better way. My class management improved from lesson to lesson. Block teaching has improved my communication skills and voice. My 'class control' fear has reduced.
